Abdominoplasty for men

If you’ve noticed that you have excess skin and/or fat on your abdomen and you’re tired of hiding it under your clothes, I Dr. Bortolini, a plastic surgery specialist, can help you get rid of the unsightly appearance.

Abdominoplasty is for men who have excess skin and/or fat on their abdomen and is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and strengthens the abdominal muscles. During the operation, some pre-existing scars on the abdomen can be removed (post-operative/post-traumatic).

Abdominoplasty is a procedure that can be combined with liposuction and many patients are recommended both procedures. Abdominoplasty (like liposuction) is not a weight loss surgery and is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise but in combination with a healthy lifestyle it can give you the results you are looking for.

Abdominoplasty is also for those who have had bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve, gastric ring, etc.) and have excess skin on the abdomen. For more details, visit the section: post-bariatric surgery

BEFORE ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY IN MEN

During the consultation for abdominoplasty surgery we will discuss everything involved in the procedure and answer any questions you may have. We will measure, discuss and choose the best option for you.

Your health will be assessed (possible diseases, allergies, usual medications). Afterwards, an abdominal ultrasound and blood tests are recommended.

Before the operation it is recommended to avoid the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin for at least 14 days prior to the operation (they promote bleeding).

Excessive exposure to the sun or the sun should be avoided before surgery.

It is also recommended to stop smoking at least 1 month before the operation or at least to considerably reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day (it hinders the healing process and complications may occur).

On the day of the abdominoplasty operation you will not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the operation.

ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY IN MEN

The duration of abdominoplasty surgery is, on average, 3-4 hours.

Abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia. In some cases (mini-abdominoplasty, lipoabdominoplasty) locoregional anaesthesia may also be used.

The incision is horizontal, across the entire width of the abdomen, located in the lower region of the abdomen, at the level of the pubic hair. The abdominal skin and fat are detached from the muscular layer underneath. The muscle is then plicated with special wires (to narrow the waist and correct post-pregnancy muscle defects), any areas of weakness or hernia are repaired.

Excess skin (usually represented by the area between the navel and pubic area) and fat is removed, with the navel retained. The integument above the navel is then pulled down and sutured to the lower integument. The umbilicus is externalised in the normal position through a small incision made in the skin.

Such surgery always leaves a horizontal scar in the lower part of the abdomen, of variable length, which is usually hidden in the bikini line and a circular scar around the new navel.

In limited cases where only a small correction is needed, miniabdominoplasty may be performed. The horizontal scar is shorter, there is no scar around the navel and recovery is easier.

At the end of the operation, an elastic corset is applied to the treated areas.

AFTER ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY

Hospitalization is about 1 – 3 days (depending on the volume aspirated, type of anesthesia, general condition of the patient).

Postoperative pain is usually of medium intensity. However, it must be taken into account that the operation is a major one and recovery will sometimes be long. Bruising (ecchymosis) and swelling (oedema) in the operated areas disappear within two weeks.

Although it is a major operation, the spectacular post-operative results are worth the effort!

In the first days after the operation, I had to be given analgesic and antibiotic treatment for 5-7 days.
The drain tubes are removed after a day or two.

The sutures may be resorbed (if absorbable sutures are used), or removed 14 days postoperatively (in the case of non-absorbable sutures).

It is necessary to interrupt activity for about 2 weeks postoperatively.

Physical exertion (going to the gym, sports) should be avoided completely for the first 2 months, and then gradually resumed.

Postoperative scars may be slightly reddish in the first months postoperatively, after which they tend to fade (up to 1 – 2 years postoperatively). Prolonged sun exposure and exposure to ultraviolet light should be avoided for the first 9 months postoperatively.

The elastic corset should be worn for a minimum of 4 – 6 weeks to encourage the skin to settle.

You should come for a check-up every 2-3 days to 2 weeks and then at 3, 6, 12 months.
