If you have noticed that your child’s ears are larger and further away from the head than they should be(clapauge) or even you have this conformation call and schedule a consultation with your child because I, Dr. Bortolini, a plastic surgery specialist can solve this problem.
Otoplasty, the correction of the ears that are crooked, is done to bring the ears closer to the head or to make them smaller. Even if the ears are just a little deformed, this shortcoming can lead to frustration and problems fitting in among your child’s schoolmates.
Usually the ears are asymmetrical, one being more deformed than the other. Even for adults the effects are not only aesthetic, but also psychological and social.
In the operation they can straighten the ears and also shape or reduce their size.
Adults can have this operation in combination with other facial or body plastic surgery operations.
The otoplasty operation is performed after the age of 4-5 years, when the ear has almost reached its final size, preferably around the age of 6-7 years.
Other children may be mean to your child, call him/her names and even bullying may occur. It is advisable to have the operation done before the patient enters the community (kindergarten, school), to avoid the appearance of psychological trauma due to malicious comments.
It is preferable that the initiative for the surgery of detached ears comes first from the children, who are more cooperative and more satisfied with the result.
During the consultation we will discuss everything about the surgery, its risks and limitations and I will answer all your questions. We will take measurements and choose together the best option for you or your child.
We will assess your health (possible diseases, allergies, usual medications). Afterwards, blood tests are recommended.
Before the otoplasty operation, it is recommended to avoid the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin for at least 14 days prior to the operation (they promote bleeding).
Excessive exposure to the sun or the sun should be avoided before surgery.
On the day of the operation you should not consume food and liquids for at least 6 hours before the operation.
For adults :
Contraceptives should be stopped 4-6 weeks before surgery because they increase the risk of thromboembolic (blood clotting) complications.
It is also recommended to stop smoking at least 1 month before the operation or at least to reduce considerably the number of cigarettes smoked per day (it hinders the healing process and complications may occur).
The otoplasty operation is not performed during the menstrual cycle.
The otoplastyoperation takes about 1 hour.
The surgery is performed by reshaping the auricular cartilage and anchoring it to bring the ears closer to the head. The resulting incisions are masked on the posterior aspect of the ear.
Otoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia or sedation especially in the case of children as it is the safest and ensures operator comfort for both the child and the surgical team.
Most otoplasties do not require days of postoperative hospitalization but sometimes in children who have had general anesthesia it is better to stay 1 night for supervision.
At 10 days postoperatively, the threads are removed and an elastic (tennis) band must be worn, at first non-stop, then only at night, as this helps the operation heal more quickly.
Children can return to the community after 1 week (but must be supervised for the first month) and adults can resume work after 2-3 days.
