Liposuction is not a method of treating obesity, but is a body shaping and contouring surgery to remove small-to-moderate deposits at the following levels:
You are a good candidate for liposuction if you are young and have good skin elasticity, so that after removing fat deposits your skin can “mold/sew” to your new body contour. Otherwise, it is also indicated to remove excess skin, which is another larger operation called abdominoplasty..
In some cases I, Dr. Bortolini, specialist in plastic surgery, perform liposuction as a surgical procedure by itself, but I can also combine it with other procedures such as abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, otoplasty, etc.
It is important to know that liposuction is not in itself a treatment for obesity or a substitute for a healthy and balanced diet, but in combination with a healthy lifestyle it can give you the desired results.
NEW! To give you an idea of what you will look like after this surgery we will make a digital simulation of the operation.
During the consultation we will discuss everything about liposuction, its risks and limitations and I will answer all your questions. We will take measurements and together we will choose the best option for you.
Your health is evaluated (possible diseases, allergies, usual medications). Afterwards an abdominal ultrasound and blood tests are recommended.
Before the operation it is recommended to avoid the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin (they promote bleeding) for at least 14 days before the operation.
Excessive exposure to sun or sunlight should be avoided before surgery.
It is also recommended to stop smoking at least 1 month before the operation or at least to considerably reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day (it hinders the healing process and complications may occur).
On the day of the liposuction operation you will not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the operation.
Depending on the areas treated and their size, liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia (combined or not with sedation), spinal anesthesia, or general anesthesia.
Incisions (scars) – are usually small (3mm) and hidden from view. Initially, a fluid (containing anaesthetic and a vasoconstrictor) is infiltrated into the areas to reduce trauma and bleeding.
Then a thin tube (cannula) is inserted through these incisions to dislodge excess fatty tissue by means of a duct-vein movement. This excess is then removed by suction.
The duration of the operation is, on average, 1-3 hours.
In order to remove as much of the fat deposits as possible and to tighten the abdominal muscles (quads), a special GPS-guided laser liposuction machine can be used which melts the excess fat and thus evacuates it more easily and also helps to “mould” the skin on the respected area with a superior result to classical liposuction due to the stimulation of collagen production.
At the end of the liposuction procedure, an elastic corset or elastic pants is applied to the treated areas.
Hospitalization after liposuction is about 1-2 days (depending on the volume aspirated, type of anesthesia, general condition).
Postoperative pain is usually of low intensity. Bruising (ecchymosis) and swelling (oedema) of the operated areas disappear within two weeks.
In the first days after the operation, analgesic and antibiotic treatment must be followed for 5-7 days.
The elastic corset must be worn for at least 4-6 weeks to help the skin settle.
Physical exertion and sports should be avoided for at least 1 month and should be resumed gradually. Massage of the liposuctioned areas can be started immediately after the bruising and swelling have disappeared.
Check-ups will be at first every 2-3 days to 2 weeks and then every 3,6,12 months.
The price of liposuction surgery varies according to the complexity of the case and the number of areas to be treated and includes :
