Mastopexy or breast lift surgery is the surgery for women whose breasts have lost volume after pregnancy, weight loss or aging, who have excess skin and have lost their original position with the aim of improving the appearance and shape of the breasts.
If breast ptosis is also associated with atrophy (low volume, “empty” breast appearance), breast lift is also associated with breast augmentation (insertion of a silicone implant) to fill and lift the “sagging” breast.
The combined breast augmentation-mastopexy operation(breast augmentation and lift) can restore breast volume and correct the position of the breasts and possible asymmetries, thus obtaining the breasts you have always wanted! It can also reposition, symmetrize and shrink the areola.

BEFORE BREAST LIFT SURGERY
During the consultation we will discuss everything involved in the surgery, and I will answer any questions you may have. We will take measurements, discuss and choose together the implant that best suits you!
Your health will be assessed (any illnesses, allergies, medications you are taking). Afterwards we recommend a breast ultrasound/mammogram and blood tests.
Before surgery it is recommended to avoid the use of anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, nurofen, ketonal – they promote bleeding) for at least 14 days.
Contraceptives should be stopped 4-6 weeks before surgery because they increase the risk of complications (blood clots).
Excessive exposure to the sun or the sun should be avoided a few days before the operation.
It is also recommended to stop or at least reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day (it hinders the healing process and complications may occur).
Breast lift surgery should not be performed during the menstrual cycle!
On the day of the operation you will not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the operation.
It is recommended to avoid gel nails or nail polish because they interfere with the anaesthesia machines. It is also not advisable to use body creams in the morning.
BREAST LIFT SURGERY
Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts about 3-4 hours.
There are several types of breast lifts depending on how sagging the breast is :Breast lift
Periareolar – the scar is located on the outer edge of the areola and is the least noticeable. This technique is recommended for patients with minor breast ptosis.
Circumvertical – a periareolar scar and a vertical scar (from the areola to the submammary os). It is the most commonly used technique with stable results over time.
Inverted “T” or “anchor” scar – is applied in special cases with a circumvertical scar and a horizontal scar in the submammary fold. It is recommended in cases of breast ptosis where the excess skin is very large.
In very rare cases where the lump is very small, it is only possible to lift the breast with the help of the implant (inserted through the inframammary fold, without other scars).
Hospitalisation is generally 1 day.
If a silicone implant is also used, it is most often placed in the submuscular pocket. In certain situations, in selected cases, the breast implant can also be positioned subglandularly.
The external suture is intradermal with the appearance of a fine line (the final scar depends not only on the suture, but on how your body heals).
Because I give the surgery a lot of attention and use a minimally traumatic technique, with almost no bleeding, there is frequently no need to use drainage tubes, which eliminates a lot of post-operative pain and discomfort!
The sutures are absorbable, of the highest quality (Monocryl) to ensure the best possible healing and no need for a subsequent visit to remove the sutures.
When you leave the operating room, you will wear a corset day and night for 2 months to avoid displacement of the implants and to have a better result.
AFTER BREAST LIFT SURGERY
I Dr. Bortolini recommend that in the first days of recovery you rest well, hydrate, meals should be light, small and regular.
Postoperative pain can be milder or more pronounced depending on where the implant is inserted (above or below the pectoral muscle) and on each person’s perception. It is felt in the form of a strong muscle fever and decreases from day to day during the first week.
Support in the hands when getting in and out of bed should be avoided (it is ideal to have someone who can help you in the first few days after the operation). After each operation, oedema (swelling) and bruising (bruising) appear and will disappear within 2 weeks.
During the first 2 months it is preferable to sleep on your back and not on your side (to avoid displacement of the implants and subsequent asymmetries).
In the first days after the operation, an analgesic and antibiotic treatment should be followed for 5-7 days. Physical exertion and sports should be avoided for at least 2 months.
Wearing a seat belt should be avoided for at least 2-3 weeks, as should driving a car.
Checks will be at first every 2-3 days and then every 3,6,12 months.
To monitor the implant (spontaneous ruptures, etc.) and the breasts, I recommend an annual ultrasound consultation by Dr Bortolini, plastic surgeon.
The final result after the aesthetic breast lift operation can be evaluated 1 year after the operation.
Frequently, the scars have a pink and swollen appearance in the first months postoperatively, but then become whitish and less visible. The scars depend a lot on how each patient heals and sometimes, unfortunately, they can become white, white or brown.
