Fat in the cervical area can be removed by lipolysis (simple injection of a substance that reduces fat deposits) or liposuction. In the case of older age and a very obvious double chin with a large excess of skin, a neck lift can be performed, a neck stretching operation that remodels both the fat layers and the muscle tissue and remedies the problem of excess skin.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits by suction under general or local anaesthesia. It is ideal if the person is young and has good skin elasticity to mould to the new contour. In some cases liposuction is performed as a stand-alone surgical procedure, but it can be combined with other procedures or other areas of liposuction.
BEFORE DOUBLE CHIN SURGERY
During the consultation we will discuss everything about the double chin surgery, what are the risks and limitations, and I will answer all your questions. We will take measurements and together we will choose the best option for you.
Your health will be evaluated (possible diseases, allergies, usual medications). Afterwards, an abdominal ultrasound and blood tests are recommended.
Before the operation it is recommended to avoid the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin (they promote bleeding) for at least 14 days before the operation.
Contraceptives should be stopped 4-6 weeks before surgery because they increase the risk of thromboembolic complications (blood clots).
Excessive exposure to the sun or the sun should be avoided before surgery.
It is also recommended to stop smoking at least 1 month before or at least to reduce considerably the number of cigarettes smoked per day (it hinders the healing process and complications may occur).
Double chin surgery is not performed during the menstrual cycle.
On the day of the operation you should not consume food and liquids for at least 6 hours before the operation.
It is recommended to avoid gel nails or dark colours because they interfere with anaesthetic machines*, body creams in the morning.
CERVICAL LIPOSUCTION SURGERY
If it is only to treat the neck area (of the neck) liposuction can be done under local anesthesia with or without a little sedation for patient comfort.
The approach incision (scar) – is usually a single, small 3mm incision under the chin. Initially a fluid (containing anaesthetic and a vasoconstrictor substance) is infiltrated into the approached areas in order to reduce trauma and bleeding. Then a thin tube (cannula) is inserted through these incisions to dislodge the excess fatty tissue by means of a duct-vine motion. This excess is then removed by suction.
The duration of cervical liposuction surgery is, on average, 1 hour.
At the end of the operation, an elastic band is applied to the treated area.
AFTER DOUBLE CHIN SURGERY
If the cervical liposuction surgery was done with only local anesthesia the patient can go home. If sedation or general anaesthesia is required the patient stays 1 night.
Postoperative pain is usually of low intensity. Bruising and swelling (oedema) in the operated areas disappear within two weeks.
In the first days after the operation, analgesic and antibiotic treatment must be followed for 5-7 days.
The elastic corset must be worn for a minimum of 4-6 weeks to help the skin settle.
Physical exertion and sport should be avoided for at least 1 month and should be resumed progressively.
Massage of the liposuctioned areas can be started immediately after the bruising and swelling have disappeared.
You should be seen for a check-up at the beginning after 2-3 days and after 3, 6, 12 months.
