ABDOMINOPLASTY BE PERFECT
Abdominoplasty is the surgery that corrects excess skin and fat as a result of weight fluctuations (fat – thin) or pregnancy. Obesity also leads to loss of skin elasticity. These problems unfortunately do not respond well to diet and exercise because the skin and underlying muscles have been stretched beforehand. Sometimes even very thin patients get lax skin especially in the abdomen.
Before abdominoplasty
We will discuss your entire medical history, diseases, health problems or chronic medication. I, Dr. Bortolini Alin, a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, recommend patients who have a weight loss plan, ideally they should reach their desired target in terms of number of kg before having abdominoplasty surgery. Women who plan to become pregnant should postpone the operation until after pregnancy because pregnancy after abdominoplasty surgery can ruin the result by stretching the abdominal wall. Obese patients and especially smokers have a very high risk of wound healing problems (risk of necrosis -> dehiscence-> infection) therefore it is extremely important (more so than other operations) to stop smoking 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after surgery. To minimize the risk of bleeding it is important not to take aspirin, alcohol or food supplements.
Abdominoplasty surgery
Abdominoplasty surgery is done under general anaesthesia and lasts about 4 hours. After the operation you will stay in hospital for 1-2 days. In the abdominoplasty a curved incision is made in the groin area, quite large from one side of the pelvic bone to the other but I try to position it as low as possible so that it can be covered by the pantyhose. The skin in block with the underlying fat is lifted from the abdominal muscles to the level of the ribcage. A second incision is created around the navel to release and reposition it. The rectus abdominis muscles that are stretched and relaxed during pregnancy are tightened and tightened so the waistline narrows and excess skin and fat is removed and the new navel is reconstructed. I consider navel reconstruction to be one of the important steps and allocate extra time to it, creating an oval, upright and slightly “buried” shape by placing certain key sutures against the abdominal muscle wall. At the end the incisions are carefully sutured in several planes with the best types of sutures to ensure the right environment for the postoperative scar to be as inconspicuous as possible. Drainage tubes are placed and these are removed in the following postoperative days when the drainage is close to 0.
Post-abdominoplasty recovery
Immediately after surgery there is moderate discomfort which is controlled with pain medication. Edema (swelling) of the abdomen is normal. You will wear an abdominal compression corset which will be put on immediately after the operation and which you must wear for up to 2 months postoperatively. It is recommended that immediately after the operation you start to move slightly to decrease the risk of thromboembolic complications. It is important to have someone close to you during the recovery period to help you mobilise more easily. Most patients return to normal activities after 2-3 weeks. Wait up to 2 months postoperatively to resume exercise and resume gradually, progressively. It takes about 1 year for the scars to fade. My patients after surgery say they finally fit into the clothes they wanted and feel confident in their bathing suits and bikinis. The excess skin that hangs down and prevents them from wearing their favorite pre-baby dress is now gone. My reward is when patients come in for checkups after several months, when they have recovered and tell me how happy they are in their new “skin” 🙂 https://beperfect.ro/cazuistica/abdominoplastie/ My team at Be Perfect Bucharest is here to help.
